Le 5 octobre, il a fait interdire à tous les Algériens de la capitale de circuler la nuit. La manifestation débute à 20h 30 dès que les gens se sont regroupés sur les Champs-Elysées. Non-violente, elle compte de nombreuses familles, des femmes et des enfants. Elle sera sévèrement punie par la police à qui le Général de Gaulle, chef du gouvernement, a donné carte blanche. Les manifestants sont roués de coup dans les commissariats ou jetés dans la Seine. Les estimations font état de plus de 200 disparus. Longtemps nié par les autorités, le massacre du 17 octobre 1961 sera reconnu par la France en 1997. I.
